Interstate accidents are unfortunately quite common in Kentucky.  Kentucky has nearly 800 miles of interstate highways. These routes are critical thoroughfares for traffic across the state. However, they are also the scene of a significant number of traffic accidents. When traffic flies at speeds of 65 miles per hour or more, mistakes or moments of inattention are magnified, and the consequences can be devastating.

According to the Kentucky State Police, approximately 700 crash-related fatalities occur on interstate highways in Louisville and throughout the state every year. Accidents on the interstates can arise from numerous causes, including:

  • Distracted or sleepy driving: Distracted and fatigued drivers pose a significant danger to others on the highway.
  • Drunk driving: Intoxicated and impaired drivers pose a danger to others on the highway.
  • Texting while driving and cellphone use: In Kentucky, it is illegal to text while driving. Unfortunately, many drivers ignore the law and engage in other unsafe cellphone use that takes their eyes off the road.
  • Motorcycle accidents: With far fewer safety mechanisms and physical cushioning than full-sized vehicles, motorcycles do not readily withstand the impact of a collision at highways speeds.
  • Tractor-trailer accidents: Kentucky’s interstates are heavily used routes for trucks and tractor-trailers. Many collisions involving trucks take place on the highway.
  • Hit-and-run accidents: Unfortunately, hit-and-run accidents are far too common on highways throughout the state.
  • Stalled vehicles: A flat tire or mechanical malfunction can force motorists to take refuge on the shoulder of the highway. Unfortunately, many accidents occur when other drivers fail to take notice of crippled vehicles on the side of the road.
  • Head-on collisions: While many of Kentucky’s highways have center medians or barriers, some do not. Vehicles drifting across the centerline – or entering the highway through an exit ramp – can lead to fatal or life-altering head-on collisions.
  • Rear-end collisions: During periods of congestion, backups can lead to sudden stops. A split-second of inattention can cause a chain reaction, resulting in a multivehicle pileup.

Given the high speeds of travel and volume of traffic, accidents on the interstates often result in significant injuries.
