Distracted Driving Survey by Volvo Provides Concerning Results

A recent distracted driving survey by Volvo provides concerning results for those who are concerned about the safety of our streets and highways.  The Swedish manufacturer Volvo recently commissioned The Harris Poll to conduct a survey on safety here in the United States.

The results were stunning, to say the least.  According to the study 71% of survey respondents use their cell phone while driving.  The survey found parents and Generation X’rs are most likely to use their cell phones while driving their car.  73% of parents (versus 66% of non-parents) admitted to using their cell phones while driving.  Over 89% of survey respondents believed better information and education regarding distracted driving and cell phone use is needed.

The distracted driving survey by Volvo provides concerning results for insurance companies and law enforcement alike.  Most states have adopted laws which restrict the use of a cell phone while driving.  A present national advertising campaign focuses on the “5 seconds” it takes to check your cell phone for a text or email.  According to recent data provided by the Kentucky State Police those 5 seconds of distraction often result in severe collisions resulting in serious injuries and wrongful death.

The best strategy is to silence you cell phone and place it out of reach and out of sight while driving.  Absolutely avoid texting, emailing or social media while driving.  These behaviors are becoming easily provable in a Court of law, and your cell phone will in effect testify against you in any resulting court proceeding.
