The Primary Difference Between a Truck Accident and a Car Accident

What is the primary difference between a truck accident and a car accident?  Car accidents unfortunately happen every day, yet recent safety improvements in vehicle design and passenger restraint have helped to reduce the occurrence and severity of resulting injuries.  However, these factors are not as effective when a passenger vehicle is involved in an accident with a commercial truck or tractor-trailer.

The primary difference between a truck accident and a car accident is the weight of the commercial vehicle and the resulting force of a collision between a truck and an SUV, pickup or car.  Commercial vehicles can easily weigh between 70,000 and 80,000 pounds.  A typical passenger vehicle will only weigh 3,000 or 4,000 pounds.  The sheer force of impact in a truck accident is several times higher than a car crash.  The force of the impact must be transferred into the body of the car and ultimately into the bodies of those who are travelling in the smaller vehicle.
