Kentucky Officers Continue Anti-Drunk Driving Initiatives

30 years after 27 people died in Kentucky’s worst drunk driving accident involving a drunk driver and a school bus Kentucky officers continue anti-drunk driving initiatives to reduce accidents and save lives.  Drunk driving accidents are one of the most common types of car accidents in Louisville and across Kentucky.  Public safety authorities have been trying for years to bring down the number of wrongful deaths and serious injuries. Those efforts are ongoing and include both public education and law enforcement initiatives.

One such initiative that is national in scope is the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. Sponsored by federal transportation funds the campaign continues to try to remind drivers of the risk of driving under the influence.  Kentucky law enforcement authorities are participating in the initiative.  A number of officers from Kentucky gathered a few years ago with their counterparts from West Virginia and Ohio to help kick off the initiative.  A trooper from the Kentucky State Police said the goal of the program is to make travel safer. The state police will be targeting areas with high accident rates for stepped-up safety checkpoints and patrols.

There are many anti-drunk driving initiatives such as the CDC’s “Sobering Facts: Driving In Kentucky” publication.  The Kentucky chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving or MADD noted that 175 people lost their lives in 2017 due to DUI accidents.  Kentucky ranked 3rd in the nation with more than 21% of traffic related fatalities due to drunk driving.
