Should You Opt for the Extra Insurance When Renting a Car

Should you opt for the extra insurance when renting a car in Louisville or anywhere in Kentucky?  What if you are injured in a car accident while you are traveling?  If you have ever rented a car while traveling you are probably familiar with the dilemma of whether or not to purchase the extra rental insurance offered by the rental car company.  The agent renting your vehicle will have all sorts of war stories about people who had bad outcomes because they didn’t opt for the extra insurance when renting a car.

The first step in answering this question is to check your own motor vehicle coverage.  Don’t be hesitant to call your insurance provider and ask:

  1. Am I covered if I cause a motor vehicle accident or if I am injured by another driver while driving a rental car
  2. What amount does your policy cover for collision (property damage) and injury (medical expenses)

The next thing to consider is your own health insurance policy.  If you believe you have adequate health insurance coverage you probably will not need to opt for the extra insurance when renting a car.  This is also the case if your PIP (Personal Injury Protection) policy covers medical payments and/or personal injury.  If you have purchased travel insurance these policies usually cover rental car collision.  Many major credit card companies also offer the same type of coverage provided when you opt for the extra insurance when renting a car – especially if you pay for the rental card with their credit card.

It may make sense to opt for the extra insurance when renting a car if you have the most basic insurance required by Kentucky law, are traveling on business, are renting a car outside of the United States or if you simply want some extra piece of mind.

A little homework prior to your trip should make this an easy decision at the rental car counter.
